It is with great sadness that we announce today the passing of our great  colleague and friend  Des Kavanagh and our sympathies and thoughts go to all of Des’s family at this difficult time.

Des, a proud Donegal man  was one of the  key founding  members  of the OSI. He was  President of our Society from 1991 -1992, which gave him great joy and pride as it also coincided  with Donegal winning their first All Ireland in 1992.  Des was a long serving member of the IDA.

Des was an early  pioneer of high standards in clinical orthodontics, attending conferences  worldwide  in the 1980s  learning  his craft and broadening  his knowledge base. His  interest in orthodontics  became  obvious to many of the speakers. This  coupled with his great sense of humour and infectious laugh allowed him build friendships  and invite many of the speakers to present here at our small scientific meetings to promote excellence. Remember at this time, little was known about contemporary orthodontics in Ireland.  Des, with a few other colleagues  founded the Orthodontic Study Club which met twice annually for a day to discuss cases. I remember this was a huge benefit to young  interested members at the time.

Des built a huge practice in Galway  over forty years and was blessed to be  joined by his son Conal for the latter half to continue  his wonderful legacy.  Des had many strings to his bow  and his love of the arts  especially poetry  became very evident in later years.

In his own words  ‘’since putting down the drill, I have taken up the quill’’

His book of poetry  Binnion Road  was published in 2021.

He was a wonderful colleague, clinician, friend and  above all a powerful advocate for our Society.

Ar Dheis De go raibh a anam.
